'description' => '
She has fought with destiny, with poverty, lack of education and even braved the confinement during the Indo-Chinese War of 1962. Yet she is a superwoman and no wonder people call her ‘Don of Tangra!’ And yes, she is a woman, a superwoman of sorts. Monica Liu is not just another Chinese grandmother from Kolkata, but is one of the most respected member of Tangra’s Chinese community. Today, she has gone on to establish five Chinese restaurants in Tangra and South Kolkata just by her grit and courage. And the journey was not easy at all!

Liu is respected as an entrepreneur, she is also a grandmother of nine grandchildren. She even holds a title these days, that can make your heart tremble -- Don of Tangra. Well, she has no underground connections, or has never murdered or even slapped anyone, but people call her so, for her sheer bravery in the face of the real goons, who have tried to intimidate her and get free food from her restaurants on and off.

In 1991, when she opened her family’s first restaurant, Kim Ling in Tangra, local musclemen tried to coerce the family into serving them free meals, but Monica stood up to them. She made it clear that they were here to do business, and would not be serving free meals. So, she decided to return their ruffian behaviour in kind. Liu earned her strength from her past struggles that made her tough as steel. During the 1962 Indo-China War, Liu’s whole family was arrested (along with hundreds of other Chinese living in India), and shifted to Deoli Camp in Rajasthan. Even after the war got over, the government seemed to have forgotten about these arrested Chinese families for almost five years.

Finally, it was Liu and a few others who wrote a petition to the then Home Minister, which led to their release. But by then, the family had lost all their connections in Kolkata, and had to start all over again. Her father had only 24 rupees in his pocket and they were seven members in the family. Young Monica and her sister would help their mother make momos to sell. That’s where Monica Liu’s culinary journey and her dreams to become a food entrepreneur began.

Today, she owns five extremely popular Chinese restaurants in Kolkata--Kim Ling and Beijing in Tangra, Tung Fong on Park Street, Mandarin on Sarat Bose Road, and Mandarin on Lake Avenue.

'description' => '
Until now, were you living under the impression that the first zoo in Asia was in Kolkata? Well, all of us are mistaken.In the early 1800s, there were only three public zoos across the world. Barrackpore zoo was the fourth. Surprisingly, traces of this unheard Barrackpore Zoo was only recently found in the writings of a world famous historian, named Amitabh Karakun.

Even today, a little search will throw up traces of this ancient zoo,that lies in Lath Sahib Garden. However, no one can enter the premises without permission. The garden has almost a dense undergrowth today and even in the morning, sound of crickets will reach your ears. You will find the ruins of structures that were constructed almost 200 years ago strewn here and there!You will also come across an aviary of birds in a Gothic structure. And isn’t it unfortunate that only a few kilometers away from Kolkata, remains the scattered remains of this long forgotten history and hardly any of us knew of it?

Between 1798-1805, Lord Wellesley was the Governor of Kolkata. During the beginning of the eighteenth century, he created a picturesque garden on the banks of the Ganges in Barrackpore spread across 1006 bighas of land. This garden is today, called Lat Bagan or Mangal Pandey Park. Right next to this garden, he built a gigantic house which resembled no less than a castle. Later, this house was named Barrackpore Government House.But why was the zoo constructed?

Also Read

Lord Wellesley felt the need of making a detailed description of the animals in Asia. This was primarily because the Europeans were mostly ignorant when it came to the category of Indian animals. He started working on the first Natural Research Center in Asia, the 'National Heritage of India'. Various animals were required to be collected. Barrackpore Zoo was built to store these animals and birds. Until 1804, Rs 2,791 was invested in the cost of maintenance of these animals and birds. And this was indeed a whooping amount!

The London Zoo was built in 1828. Barrackpore Zoo was built even before that. Between 1817 and 1819, two more bird aviaries and animal centres were built. Heard of Chiria More of Barrackpore? Well, the name Chiria has its origin from this zoo. The zoo had animals such as the African donkey, tiger, bear, bison, leopard, mouse deer, kangaroos, monkeys and various species of birds. There were separate ponds dedicated to rhinoceros and deer.Unfortunately, Barrackpore no more has traces of this historical zoo created by Wellesley. Today, you will only get pertinent information regarding this ancient zoo in London Museum.

'description' => '
Imagine running 80 km through an adventurous terrain of Palash and red laterite, along Sal forests of the picturesque Ayodhya Hills. Well, if you are in Purulia tomorrow you can witness the other face of Bengal’s landscape and that too through an adventurous sports, that can even fetch you a crown of victory.

Engineer Saikat Dutta has always been an adventure freak. Born in Purulia, it was almost a tale of homecoming for him, to organise The Bengal Ultra Run, through the terrains of his birthplace. The ‘Run’ will give a chance to all participants to discover the still undiscovered nooks of this beautiful district of Bengal. Purulia’s famous Ayodhya Hills has already been on the global tourist map, but usually these are hotspots for picnic goers who spend some hours along the beautiful blue hills and Sal forests and leave. They hardly ever try to discover new corners of this vibrant district.

The Bengal Ultra Run,will give a chance to all to discover this hidden face of Purulia. The event is an amalgamation of Ultra Marathon and Trail Run, covering almost 80 km stretch on a hilly terrain. Along the path one will get to see small tribal villages and even the picturesque Bird Hill of Mura Buru. The Trail Run will help spread the potential of adventure tourism of Purulia, that is already being promoted by the state tourism department. Saikat has always been a great fan of adventure sports. Even as a student he tried a hand in trekking, and during his job life, he participated in several half marathons, including 10km and 12 km stretches. Then one day he came across a video on ‘Trail Run’ that attracted him. Trail Run means running across hills and difficult terrain, which needs a lot of physical fitness, but is extremely rewarding, considering the breath-taking natural bounty that such trails have on offer.

Saikat has taken the help of well-known Trail Runner Nilendu Mukherjee to fix up the route, hydration points along the route, camps within the villages and even organising Purulia’s famous Chhau Dance at some meeting points. Others like Sudip Ghosh and Nishant Maheshwari also extended their help in this venture. Even locals and district administration and police force have helped. The run had three sections --- 10 km, 25 km and 50 km. Incidentally, the Bengal Ultra Run has got recognition of the International Trail Run Association.

After the run, there will also be programmes organised by locals to showcase the handicrafts and art as well as song and music of the area. This will further help artisans of Purulia to showcase their talents to a global audience. So, why wait? Just hop on a train or bus and shoot off to the land of Palash this Spring.

'description' => '
Father Franchois Laborde, the silent saint of Kolkata’s slums finally received his due recognition at the age of 92 recently. This is the man who worked relentlessly for destitute children. Father Laborde received the Légion d'Honneur (Legion of Honour) given by the French Ambassador, Alexandre Ziegler.

For the last 60 years, he has been working hard for the welfare of destitute and specially abled children of the slums through his established Howrah South Point. This is an organization which primarily works for children from deprived sections of the society. When he laid the foundation of the school in 1976, there were a handful of children and only eight volunteers. Father Franchois Laborde was highly determined about serving the needy, the sick, the underprivileged with all he could and he made sure that his dream turned into reality.

Many years have rolled by since then. Howrah South Point has expanded to nine homes, five non-formal schools, three formal schools, three specialized schools, dispensaries and vocational training centres. There are around 300 social workers who work for one lakh people in Jalpaiguri, Howrah and Asansol. With age, he has become physically feeble but his dream for serving the poor has remained unwavered. The man has remained consistent in his mission and his unconditional love for the poor is truly inspiring. Father Laborde originally belongs to France but has been given Indian citizenship.

After Satyajit Ray and Soumitro Chatterjee, Father Francois Laborde is the third person from Bengal to receive the highest civilian award of France. Father Laborde dedicated the award to the children whose development has been his only concern throughout his life. The novel ‘City of Joy’ by Dominique Lapierre was inspired by his real-life story.

Even at 92, Father Francois Laborde has miles to go before he sleeps. He spends most of his time in a retirement home in Midnapore these days. He still hopes for a better world where people would not be money minded and look for profits. He believes “People should not be just about themselves. They must be kind enough to embrace the underprivileged and the disabled thereby bridging the gap between the haves and have nots.”

'description' => '

FIRST INDIAN VICE CHANCELLOR OF CU WAS A BENGALI

'description' => '

'description' => '

'description' => '

'description' => '

'description' => '

Also Read
FIRST INDIAN VICE CHANCELLOR OF CU WAS A BENGALI
