Kolkata’s Chinese New celebrations behind the lens

As the Chinese New Year comes to an end, we bring to you a potpourri of photographs clicked by Arpita Chanda who has extensively travelled the Chinese settlements of Kolkata, to capture the moments of the community that is fast dwindling. The Chinese came to Bengal in the late 18th century. Chinese New Year is also known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year as it comes during the month of Spring. Each Chinese New Year is designation to the animals of Chinese Zodiac which characterizes the year. The Chinese communities of Kolkata celebrate Chinese New Year with greatest fervor. Their celebration is truly a splendid and colourful presentation of Chinese culture, heritage and philosophy. Each photograph captured by Arpita brings out that unique essence of the celebrations in our very own City of Joy.
