London recreated at 75 Pally This year
The water of Ganga and Thames will converge and unite this year at 75 Pally’s 53rd year celebrations. Bhawanipore 75 Pally’s Puja, is titled Amar Swapno Bhawanipore-e (My dream lies in Bhawanipore). Incidentally, this area is part of the chief minister’s assembly constituency. Subir Das, president of Bhawanipore 75 Pally Puja committee said, ‘This area in Bhawanipore has a touch of vintage Calcutta. We are trying to modify the exterior of some of the old houses on both sides of the pandal to give a feel of London so that those visiting the site will feel they are walking on a typical London street. The London street replica would also help spread Mamata Banerjee's message of transforming Kolkata to London.’
On the 70th anniversary of India’s Independence, London has tied up with Calcutta to celebrate Durgotsav jointly. On the day of the inauguration, the CM will also hold a video conference with the puja organisers of ‘London Sharad Utsav.’ Anirban Mukhopadhyay, president of Sharad Utsab Committee in London said: ‘This year the UK and India are celebrating a major bilateral year of cultural exchange. We have taken up a joint project on Bengal Heritage with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Durga Puja is part of the project and London Durgotsav will be held on a grand scale and the British Council is also a partner in this project.’
Kumortuli’s artisan Amarnath Ghosh has made the idols for London this year. Das informed they are also bringing the water from Thames for the pujo along with Gangajaal. In the presence of the CM, soil will be sifted and mixed with the water of the two rivers to form a dough. This will be then flown to London where the artist will add more soil and sculpt the idols for next year’s Puja organised by Durgotsav Committee of London.
During the four days of Puja, pandal hoppers who visit London’s Durgotsav Committee’s venue will have access to 75 Pally’s puja pandal as well. Likewise, Calcuttans visiting 75 Pally Puja pandal will be able to witness the goings-on at London puja pandal. Both Londoners and Calcuttans will be able to participate in game shows and quiz contests conducted live via video conferencing.
