The Union Railway Ministry is keen to flag off metro services between Salt Lake and Howrah by 2020. The initial stumbling block faced due to stiff objections raised by the Army and the Archaeological Survey of India have finally been sorted out. The heritage building tangle has also been taken care of and now the Railway ministry wants to expedite work on the project so that it can be completed within the next two-and-a-half years’ time. Rail Board chairman, Mr A.K. Mittal, personally inspected the tunnel running under Ganga from Howrah Maidan. According to sources, Union Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu, is expected to visit Calcutta and assess the progress of the project.
