Chandannagar College: A centre of revolutionary memories – GetBengal story
The history of Chandannagar college in the Hooghly district is truly thrilling and fascinating. From its very beginning, the college has been a unique institution because, under the leadership of its then Vice-Principal, Charuchandra Ray, the college, along with the entire town of Chandan Nagar, became a hub of revolutionary activities. In 1908, young revolutionaries sentenced to death, like Kanailal Dutta, Shreesh Chandra Ghosh, and Rashbehari Bose, were among his pupils. Because of its direct involvement in the freedom movement, the college was shut down for 23 consecutive years, an incident rare in world history. Today, under the supervision of the Chandannagar College Centre for Heritage Studies, the 161-year-old heritage building of the college houses the Chandannagar College Museum.
The creation of the museum involved extensive research and the remarkable contributions of several eminent artists and scholars. In short, it was established to preserve the legacy of Chandannagar’s revolutionaries and the socio-cultural history of both the college and the town. The newly built museum is rich with memories of the armed freedom struggle, featuring handwritten letters by revolutionaries, police reports, spinning wheels, dinghy boats, traditional looms, typewriters, and many other artifacts linked to revolutionary activities.
