Jhargram: Modern comfort amidst nature— GetBengal story

Jhargram is often called the heart of Junglemahal. This district of West Bengal is blessed with the spellbinding beauty of nature. The red laterite roads, forests of sal, mahua, jarul, and pial trees, countless species of birds, bears, rabbits, and deer—all together create a breathtaking kingdom of nature across the region. Amidst this natural charm lie villages, towns, schools, and hospitals.

But Jhargram is not only about scenic beauty; the land also bears witness to the battles between Mughal emperor Akbar’s general Man Singh and the indigenous Malla kings, making it historically significant as well. It is also the homeland of several tribal communities such as the Santals, Lodhas, Mundas, Mahatos, and Bhumijs. Above all, perhaps the most remarkable aspect is how natural beauty, the rivers Kangsabati and Subarnarekha, and the culture and lifestyle of diverse communities have blended to make Jhargram one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state.

The transformation of Jhargram into one of the finest tourist destinations of the state is the result of the relentless efforts of the state administration. A remarkable initiative in this regard is the Jhargram Prakriti Parjatan Kendra (Nature Tourism Centre). This centre has been established by the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Limited, under the Government of West Bengal, which is also responsible for maintaining the eco-tourism hub of Jhargram.

Jhargram town, the district headquarters, is located 178 km from Kolkata by road and 158 km by rail. Just 3 km away from this town, right opposite the Bandorbhula Timber Depot under the Jhargram Forest Division, lies this tranquil and beautiful nature retreat. The resort features six modern cottages equipped with every contemporary facility, including television, air conditioning, attached bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and intercom services. It also houses an elegant kitchen and dining space, where a variety of delicious dishes are served to satisfy both appetite and heart.

On request, the resort authorities often arrange tribal music and dance performances for visitors. The surroundings are breathtaking—lush greenery, abundant trees, and the constant chirping of countless birds create a delightful atmosphere. This area is truly a paradise for birdwatchers, especially in winter when flocks of migratory birds arrive. A walk along the red laterite roads may even reward you with the sight of elephants, bears, or a herd of deer moving gracefully through the forest. Strolling along the riverbanks to watch the sunrise or sunset is an experience that fills the soul with joy.

While enjoying the hospitality of this eco-tourism centre, visitors can also explore several nearby attractions such as the Jhargram Rajbari (Royal Palace), Jhargram Deer Park, and the Sabitri Temple. The core purpose of this eco-tourism centre is to promote forest conservation, preserve the lives and culture of the indigenous communities, and at the same time offer tourists an enriching travel experience. Especially during the festive season, this destination becomes an ideal getaway, close to Kolkata, affordable, and nestled in the lap of nature.

From there, buses, cars, or other local transport options are available to reach the eco-tourism centre.
