She struggled since a young age to earn in an industry where she had no godfather. At times even the hard hands of poverty did not leave her alone. Yet, Sabitri Chatterjee won, because she is one of the most powerful actresses that Tollywood has ever produced. Even Mahanayak Uttam Kumar often said he feels a bit conscious when Sabitri was his heroine, because he knew she was a very strong actress. Sabitri Chatterjee today is a living legend who even after 80 acts with the same elan as we saw her in her heydays. An extremely versatile actress she could easily be the quiet widow of Grihadaha, showing her subtle self while loving Uttam against the aggression of Suchitra Sen. The next moment she could seamless transform herself into the hysteric wife in Mouchak opposite Uttam Kumar. Her spontaneity, honesty of emotions, unfiltered expressions or finesse in acting, her tremendous chemistry on screen with her co-actors made her acting career spanning sixty years marked with several milestones.

Born in Kamalpur in Comilla district of modern Bangladesh in 1937, a young Sabitri experienced the carnage of partition and had to take refuge at her sister’s home in Kolkata. Because of her difficult circumstances and hand-to-mouth existence, she had to sign up for roles in Tollywood to earn a living and support her family. Her meeting with Kanan Devi, who was a superstar in those days, influenced her a lot. No just movies, Sabitri was equally proficient on stage and even in her old age she often gives performances. Her first brush with theatre was with the group Uttar Sarathi. But it was her performance in Natun Yahudi which focused on the lives of refugees belonging to East Pakistan that brought her to the forefront and none other than Sisir Bhadura was impressed by her performance. She used to work as a junior artiste since her school days and finally bagged the lead role in Pasher Bari by Sudhir Mukherjee in 1952. It is often known that comedian Bhanu Bandhopadhay supported her a lot during her struggling days.

But the big break came when she met the idol of her life Uttam Kumar while rehearsing at the Kalika Theatre. Who doesn’t know that Sabitri had an extremely affectionate relationship with the great star and in many interviews had hinted she was in awe and love for him all her life. Uttam Kumar took her father Sashadhar Chatterjee’s permission to cast her in a film on one condition that he would personally escort his daughter to the rehearsals. Uttam Kumar readily agreed. Sabitri Chatterjee was seen opposite Uttam Kumar in Basu Parivar, a family drama directed by the star himself. The duo had a unique chemistry that has come up over and over again in multiple superhit films like Mouchak, Bhranti Bilas, Nishipadma, Bhranti Bilas and many more. Uttam Kumar had once confessed that ‘Sabi’s eyes were so powerful and mesmerizing that it was often difficult to act while looking into her doe-shaped eyes!’ She had also teamed up with Soumitro Chatterjee in Mrinal Sen’s Pratinidhi. Soumitro Chatterjee still considers her to be an actor of the highest caliber and we again saw them recently in Praktaan.

What is more engrossing about her, is her comedy roles, laced with a superb comic timing. Perfect in movies like Bhranti Bilash and Mouchak. She often said, “To be a complete actress one has to experiment with all sorts of characters.” And that is exactly what she did in real life, with her effortless and captivating performances and perfect sense of timing. As for stage, her performance as Padma, the maid servant in the play Adarsha Hindu Hotel which ran for more than 500 shows at the Rangmal Theatre Hall will always be her best. What is even more inspiring is she still acts, even after dominating Bengali cine-world for six decades. We hope and pray she will do so forever.
', 'bengali_description' => '', 'image2' => null, 'image3' => 'uploads/story_image/sabitri_latest.jpg', 'image4' => '', 'image5' => '', 'image7' => '', 'image8' => null, 'image9' => null, 'image10' => null, 'image11' => null, 'video' => '', 'album_price' => null, 'default_image' => true, 'language_option' => null, 'default_video' => null, 'created' => '2019-11-24 16:29:26', 'modify' => '0000-00-00', 'status' => 'A' ) ), (int) 1 => array( 'OurChoice' => array( 'id' => '769', 'item_id' => '3113', 'created' => '2019-11-27 07:50:54' ), 'Story' => array( 'id' => '3113', 'section_id' => '2', 'writer_id' => '8', 'category_id' => '35', 'title' => 'First look of Avijatrik, the newly-made monochrome last leg of Apur Sansar ', 'bengali_title' => '', 'seo_url' => 'first-look-of-avijatrik-the-newly-made-monochrome-last-leg-of-apur-sansar', 'subtitle' => '
Apu, Aparna and Kajol return to silver screen in a B/W mode
', 'bengali_subtitle' => '', 'subsubtitle' => '
Apu, Aparna and Kajol return to silver screen in a B/W mode
', 'bengali_subsubtitle' => '', 'heading' => '
First look of Avijatrik, the newly-made monochrome last leg of Apur Sansar
', 'bengali_heading' => '', 'description' => '
Apu is back again. That iconic character created by author Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay and given a new dimension in Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959). The next step to that famous ‘Apu Trilogy’ is returning to the big screen again. Directed by Subhrajit Mitra, the new flick, Avijatrik is based on Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay’s concluding part of the novel, Aparajito, a part that was left aside by Ray.

Satyajit Ray’s Aparajito had created history 60 years ago and had immortalized Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Sharmila Tagore in the iconic roles of Apu and Aparna. Bengalis have still not been able to extricate themselves from the idyllic innocence and purity of the romance portrayed in the film. It is only natural that the new film will face a tough challenge and will be probably compared to its predecessor, Ray’s masterpiece, Aparajito.

The director of Abhijatrik makes it very clear at the outset that his venture starts where Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy ended. Abhijatrik will take Apu’s story forward and is a tribute to the great director for introducing to the world a brilliant author, Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, and his immortal creations, Aparna and Apu. Ever since the announcement of the film, netizens have been curious about the period look and casting of the film.

The film has been shot at various locations in different parts of the country. The entire film has been shot in monochrome to retain the rich aesthetic flavour. The director of photography (DOP) Supratim Bhol is ecstatic because he feels the aesthetic beauty of a film can be magnificently captured in black and white and since scope for filming in black and white seldom comes these days, it is a challenge and it is a pleasure for any cinematographer to work in monochrome.

Avijatrik focuses on the wanderlust of the protagonist and the story of a sublime bond between a father and a son. Ray’s film leaves a major part of the novel that deals with the bonding that develops gradually between Apu and his six-year-old son Kajol. Avijatrik introduces new characters, including Lila, who was not part of the trilogy but was a major character in the novel. Ancient Jain temple found under Kangsabari River in Purulia!
', 'bengali_heading' => '', 'description' => '
Located on the northern flank of Kangsabati (Kansai) river, the district of Purulia is steeped in history. Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra of circa 5th-century A.D. mentions that Purulia was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas and was a part of the country known as Vajra-bhumi in ancient times.

Recently, Tum-Jhalda area under Beldi village of Arsha Block was rife with excitement as the news of discovering ‘hidden treasures’ on the bed of Kangsabati River spread like wildfire. Local villagers rushed to the riverbank to witness the spectacle. As it turned out, remnants of a 1,000-year-old terracotta architecture was discovered. After a thorough inspection, archaeologists have opined the terracotta structure is typical of ancient Jain architecture.

An expert on folk culture and conservator of Jain customs and traditions inspected the findings and suggested the terracotta constructions were built in the Deoul or Shikhar (is a local term for the tower of a temple) style prevalent in the 10th-11th centuries. As the river changed its course, the entire area was engulfed by Kangsabati River and the shrines were inundated and lost in the erosion.

Purulia has long been a rich cultural zone as this land came under various cultural influences at different periods of history right from the 6th century BC when Jaina Tirthankara Mahavira—as reported in the Kalpasutra, passed through this land. The site was discovered by chance by locals who usually take the short route to walk across the silted basin of the river and reach the other end of the riverbank. Even the grand old pink mansion at 21/1 Jhamapukur that houses this erstwhile publishing house of Kolkata that goes deep within the ethos of Bengal’s literature and culture, sends goosebumps. The green kharakhari windows and doors of the building tell tales of a glorious past. The plaque infront have words like ‘Bordakutir’ and ‘Chamatkar Bari’ written on it. During the golden era of Bengali literature, legendary stalwarts like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Haraprasad Shastri, Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay used to visit Deb Sahitya Kutir regularly. There was a time when gems of Bengali literature including Ashutosh Deb’s dictionary, Shuktara, Nobo Kollol, Vidyasagar’s Bornoporichoy were published from Deb Sahitya Kutir.

This noteworthy publishing house of the city was started by Barada Prasad Mazumdar who also once owned a huge zamindari. But like many other zamindars of that age, he turned alcoholic and lost out on everything he had. However, he decided to start his life afresh. He came to Kolkata’s Battala, which was an important centre for publications in those days. After going through a hard time, with the little savings that he had, he started ferrying books from house to house. By sheer hard work and tenacity, he opened a press, B.P. M’S press which has its name mentioned in The Calcutta Gazette of 1860.

The third son of Barada Prasad, Ashutosh Dev inherited the right to his father’s business. He planned to publish a dictionary that became very famous. In 1924, he bought the copyright of many books of Vidyasagar. One of them being Borno Porichoy. This was the year Deb Sahitya Kutir was officially established. Over the years, the publishing house gained importance for bringing out translations of children’s literature, mythological stories, children’s sharadiya magazines and a lot more. The journey of Deb Sahitya Kutir has truly been spectacular. The endeavour of the five generations has kept it alive and popular among youths and students.

Unfortunately, though Deb Sahitya Kutir is on its way to complete 100 years, the building did not receive a ‘heritage tag’ in the graded list of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. One of its current owners, Rupa Mazumdar informed Purono Kolkatar Golpo (PKG) that the house is under the threat of demolition by promoters. PKG made an appeal for the heritage tag of the building. The West Bengal Heritage Commission finally addressed the issue and gave the Heritage status which will save the building from land sharks.
', 'bengali_description' => '', 'image2' => null, There was a time when gems of Bengali literature including Ashutosh Deb’s dictionary, Shuktara, Nobo Kollol, Vidyasagar’s Bornoporichoy were published from Deb Sahitya Kutir.

', 'bengali_description' => '', 'image2' => null, 'image3' => 'uploads/story_image/deb-sahitya-kutir_heritage_new.jpg', 'image4' => '', 'image5' => '', 'image7' => '', 'image8' => null, 'image9' => null, 'image10' => null, 'image11' => null, 'video' => '', 'album_price' => null, 'default_image' => true, 'language_option' => null, 'default_video' => null, 'created' => '2019-11-24 12:07:00', 'modify' => '0000-00-00', 'status' => 'A' ) )include - APP/View/Home/story_detail.ctp, line 241 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 961 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 923 View::render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 473 Controller::render() - CORE/Cake/Controller/Controller.php, line 960 Dispatcher::_invoke() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 200 Dispatcher::dispatch() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 167 [main] - APP/webroot/index.php, line 118

', 'bengali_description' => '', 'image2' => null, 'image3' => 'uploads/story_image/sabitri_latest.jpg', 'image4' => '', 'image5' => '', 'image7' => '', 'image8' => null, 'image9' => null, 'image10' => null, 'image11' => null, 'video' => '', 'album_price' => null, 'default_image' => true, 'language_option' => null, 'default_video' => null, 'created' => '2019-11-24 16:29:26', 'modify' => '0000-00-00', 'status' => 'A' ) ), (int) 1 => array( 'OurChoice' => array( 'id' => '769', 'item_id' => '3113', 'created' => '2019-11-27 07:50:54' ), 'Story' => array( 'id' => '3113', 'section_id' => '2', 'writer_id' => '8', 'category_id' => '35', 'title' => 'First look of Avijatrik, the newly-made monochrome last leg of Apur Sansar ', 'bengali_title' => '', 'seo_url' => 'first-look-of-avijatrik-the-newly-made-monochrome-last-leg-of-apur-sansar', 'subtitle' => '
Apu, Aparna and Kajol return to silver screen in a B/W mode
', 'bengali_subtitle' => '', 'subsubtitle' => '
Apu, Aparna and Kajol return to silver screen in a B/W mode
', 'bengali_subsubtitle' => '', 'heading' => '
First look of Avijatrik, the newly-made monochrome last leg of Apur Sansar
', 'bengali_heading' => '', 'description' => '

Mitra has cast Ditipriya Roy as the young, virtuous Aparna and Arjun Chakraborty as the wanderlust, free-spirited Apu.

Ancient Jain temple found under Kangsabari River in Purulia!
', 'bengali_heading' => '', 'description' => '

After the site was discovered, the villagers submitted a letter to the Block Development Officer (BDO) to begin excavation work in the area.

There are many such historical sites of ancient Jain civilization spread along the banks of Kangsabati River. Deulghata, literally meaning “the land of temples” and is considered as one of the rich heritage sites of Purulia as it bears marks of ancient Indian history, especially Jainism. There were three brick temples out of which two are extant at present. The third one, which was the biggest of the three, collapsed a few years back. Standing on the bank of river Kansabati, in Jaipur Boram village, almost 30km from Purulia town, it draws tourists from all over the world.

', 'bengali_description' => '', 'image2' => null, 'image3' => 'uploads/story_image/jain_kansai.jpg', 'image4' => '', 'image5' => '', 'image7' => '', 'image8' => null, 'image9' => null, 'image10' => null, 'image11' => null, 'video' => '', 'album_price' => null, 'default_image' => true, 'language_option' => null, 'default_video' => null, 'created' => '2019-11-22 12:26:59', 'modify' => '0000-00-00', 'status' => 'A' ) ), (int) 3 => array( 'OurChoice' => array( 'id' => '771', 'item_id' => '3116', 'created' => '2019-11-27 07:51:41' ), 'Story' => array( 'id' => '3116', 'section_id' => '6', 'writer_id' => '8', 'category_id' => '77', 'title' => 'On Heritage Week, GB brings the story of how Deb Sahitya Kutir building was saved!

', 'bengali_description' => '', 'image2' => null, Even the grand old pink mansion at 21/1 Jhamapukur that houses this erstwhile publishing house of Kolkata that goes deep within the ethos of Bengal’s literature and culture, sends goosebumps.

', 'bengali_description' => '', 'image2' => null, 'image3' => 'uploads/story_image/deb-sahitya-kutir_heritage_new.jpg', 'image4' => '', 'image5' => '', 'image7' => '', 'image8' => null, 'image9' => null, 'image10' => null, 'image11' => null, 'video' => '', 'album_price' => null, 'default_image' => true, 'language_option' => null, 'default_video' => null, 'created' => '2019-11-24 12:07:00', 'modify' => '0000-00-00', 'status' => 'A' ) ) $proc_result = array( (int) 0 => array( (int) 0 => array( 'previous' => null, 'previous_seo_url' => null, 'previous_image' => null, 'story_id' => null, 'next' => null, 'next_seo_url' => null, 'next_image' => null, 'next_next' => null, 'next_next_seo_url' => null, 'next_next_image' => null ) ) )include - APP/View/Home/story_detail.ctp, line 299 View::_evaluate() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 961 View::_render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 923 View::render() - CORE/Cake/View/View.php, line 473 Controller::render() - CORE/Cake/Controller/Controller.php, line 960 Dispatcher::_invoke() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 200 Dispatcher::dispatch() - CORE/Cake/Routing/Dispatcher.php, line 167 [main] - APP/webroot/index.php, line 118
