Guwahati’s 101-feet bamboo Durga idol aims for the Guinness Book of Records entry this year. A team of 40 artisans led by art director Nooruddin Ahmed, created this edifice for Guwahati’s Bishnupur Sarbojanin Durga Puja Committee this year.Nooruddin said the initial plan was to build a 110-feet tall Durga and accordingly, work began on this mammoth project from August. Unfortunately, it was hit by a massive storm on September 17 and the disaster destroyed the structure completely. The coordinator of the project Deep Ahmed said, “We were skeptical about the project after this debacle and it was a huge challenge for the entire team to re-start and complete construction within six days.”

Nooruddin Ahmed has been designing and making Durga idols since 1975. The massive Durga, including the frame and her sari, has been made using only bamboo poles, says this National Award winner artist. Many people have been surprised by the fact that Nooruddin has been making idols of Hindu deities despite being a Muslim. When asked, he said, ‘An artist has no religion. He is there to serve mankind and in doing so, he serves the Almighty.’
