Where has Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Srinath Bohurupi gone? Does he still stealthily move around villages at night, decked like a tiger to scare off children? No. Most bohurupis have died a silent death, thanks to the urbanization of rural Bengal, where children and adults are more glued to serials on television sets, rather than enjoy the simple fun of a folk art.

Yet, some bohurupis still live on. Kalipada Pal of Hooghly is one of them, who still holds on to an art that doesn’t pay but helps him carry on with his passion. We present today a photo story on one such bohurupi clicked by ace photographer Bijoy Choudhury.
