or months, the flower cultivation hub of Bengal has faced either drought or incessant rains leading to floods. Howrah and East Midnapore districts are the main Durga Puja flower suppliers. But major parts of these two districts have faced floods this year, and most of the flower cultivation fields went under water. Almost 80% of the flower seeds that were sown were washed away in the August floods.

As a result, price of flowers that reached Midnapore’s Kolaghat and Kolkata’s Mallik ghat flower markets are almost 15 times than the original cost. Most seedlings were lost and no new seeds could be sown in the flooded fields. Not just lotus and marigold needed for Durga Pujo rituals, even small flower petals needed for puja anjali has increased manifold.
