Kolkata students create Guinness World Records by making world’s largest spectroscope

Students of Kolkata created a Guinness World Record yesterday by assembling the largest spectroscope of the world in just 45 minutes during the 5th India International Science Festival 2019. What is even more is that 1,598 students participated in making this spectroscope and they all worked as a team. Astronomers use spectroscope to understand details like temperature and chemical composition of celestial objects, which are hundreds or millions of light years away from the Earth.

The students on Tuesday made a small personal model of advanced spectroscopes using a cardboard box with a very narrow window used to channel light in the spectroscope and a piece of CD used to split the light by a process of diffraction. They showcased their scientific feat at the Science Centre before the audience. The students told the audience that their attempt was dedicated to eminent astrophysicist Meghnad Saha and renowned physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.
