Kolkata metro journey offers time-travel through artistic mastery- GetBengal story

Kolkata is a city where history, art, and life blend in intriguing ways, compelling the audience to think again and again. Artistic intelligence is one of the most popular ways to intertwine the cultural and historical aspects, which is not only shown in exhibitions and art galleries, but also in the streets and metro stations of Kolkata.

Kolkata metro stations are now one of the major commuting hubs where millions of people journey every day, and that is the same place where Kolkata’s heritage and history are preserved with artistic mastery.

All the major metro stations are now decorated with murals, which most people see as regular decoration and art. But they actually carry deeper reflections of everyday life, culture, and the region's heritage.

For instance, the popular Kalighat station is covered with murals, inspired by the iconic Kalighat Patachitra art, and this station bursts with colour and tradition. Mosaics made of ceramic tiles underline daily Bengali life, myths, and folk tales, which blend the beliefs of past and present.

Additionally, the new Sealdah metro station features art that captures the ultimate spirit of Kolkata. The murals in this station depict famous personalities, iconic Bengali scenes, and moments of urban life, reflecting the city’s layered identity, which brings life to the stillness.

Furthermore, the metro station lineup also echoes the spiritual essence of Bengal. The unique visual delivery of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple and religious motifs reflect the sacred aura of the area.

Moreover, the arts do not leave the modern output behind, and thereby, combine science and storytelling. In the Sovabazar metro station, the iconic moment of launching Chandrayaan-3 is depicted.

On the other hand, in the Jatin Das Park metro station, the Indian freedom fighter, Jatindranath Das, is honoured by visualising his sacrifices to bring independence.

Also, other remarkable metro stations like Rabindra Sadan, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, and Howrah deliver a blended charm of the city. Sadan reflects the Bengal’s literary soul, while Mahanayak Uttam Kumar celebrates Bengali cinema’s legendary personality, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar himself. In addition, Howrah Metro's red-hued interiors and thoughtful design elements pay homage to Kolkata’s resilience, heritage, and timeless spirit.

In a nutshell, the Kolkata Metro commute not only offers a smooth journey, but also serves a travel with time, sharing various stories from the past and recent times. Every station carries an individual essence of art, where Bengal’s untold stories and efforts are wrapped in vibrant colours, making the environment decorative and purposeful.
