West Bengal unveils roadmap for safer, cleaner food on World Food Safety Day – GetBengal story

As the world observes Food Safety Day on June 7, the Government of West Bengal is taking bold strides toward ensuring that every citizen has access to clean, safe, and nutritious food. With Bengal currently ranked 5th in India in terms of food quality, state authorities are now aiming to push that ranking even higher—through a series of well-planned infrastructural upgrades, stricter enforcement, and public engagement.

In a major step, West Bengal Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Pant recently presided over a meeting of the State-Level Advisory Committee on Food Safety, which resulted in the completion of an ambitious food safety roadmap. The representatives from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) were present in the meeting, and it was focused on improving surveillance, increasing laboratory capacities, and expanding public awareness.

To improve food safety throughout the state, the West Bengal government has implemented a number of significant measures. To facilitate quicker, localized testing, new food inspection labs at the district level will be established. The Health Department will upgrade and increase the frequency of deployment of its more than 30 mobile food testing units.

Testing facilities from the Animal Resources Development and Public Health Engineering departments will also be utilised to expand capacity. A zero-tolerance policy has been enforced for eateries found serving adulterated or unhygienic food.

In addition, the government will tighten oversight on cloud kitchens and online food delivery platforms.

As West Bengal continues to invest in food testing, hygiene monitoring, and digital governance in food services, the government urges citizens and businesses alike to join hands in safeguarding food integrity. After all, safe food is everyone’s right—and everyone’s responsibility.
