A Century and a Quarter of Legacy and Excellence at Dr. Graham’s Homes, Kalimpong - GetBengal story

Kalimpong is one of the most popular districts in North Bengal, located about 50 kilometers east of Darjeeling. It is said that in the past, trade between India and Tibet used to pass through this town. Kalimpong was also once home to the central office of the Governor of Bhutan. This charming hill town holds many historical landmarks that are not only special for tourists but also deeply meaningful to the local people. One such place, Dr. Graham’s Homes School, is a historic missionary school spread over 140 acres, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year.
John Anderson Graham came to Kalimpong, British India, from Scotland in 1889 as a representative of the Young Men’s Guild of Scotland. He was mainly involved in missionary work. Within a few years of arriving in Kalimpong, Dr. Graham became one of the leading social reformers of British India. His main aim was to understand the roots of poverty and the problems faced by children in British India.
Dr. Graham fell in love with the quiet beauty of Kalimpong, which was then just a small village. Motivated by a strong desire to educate and care for orphaned and underprivileged children, he founded a home in 1900 for Anglo-Indian orphans. It began in a rented house and was originally called St. Andrew’s Colonial Homes.
Over time, Dr. Graham slowly bought land and expanded the home. What started as a small shelter gradually turned into a full-fledged school. After his death in 1942, the school was renamed Dr. Graham’s Homes in 1947—the same year India gained independence—in memory of its founder. Today, Dr. Graham’s Homes remains one of the most respected and historic schools in the district.
Dr. Graham’s Homes School: Importance and Uniqueness
Spread across 140 acres in Kalimpong, Dr. Graham’s Homes School has a total of 56 buildings. Today, it is home to around 1,200 students. About 30 to 35 students live in each of the school’s cottages. Currently, there are seven cottages for boys and seven for girls.
One of the most unique aspects of the school is its focus on practical learning, alongside academics. Inspired by Dr. Graham’s original vision, the school still runs a poultry farm, agricultural fields, a bakery, a general store, and even its own hospital.

As it approached its 125th anniversary, Dr. Graham’s Homes School earned a proud place in history. Last year, the school was inducted into The Anglo-Indian Hall of Fame, a prestigious honour awarded by the All India Anglo-Indian Association. This special recognition celebrates the school’s remarkable legacy and continued excellence.
Under the leadership of the current principal, Mr. Neil Monterio, the school is witnessing a period of positive transformation and innovation. Before Dr. Graham’s Homes, only three other renowned institutions—La Martiniere College in Lucknow, The Bishop’s School in Pune, and St. George’s School in Chennai—had received this honour.
Out of the 160 Anglo-Indian schools across India, Dr. Graham’s Homes in Kalimpong is the fourth to be included in this esteemed list, marking a significant milestone in its rich legacy.

Alongside academics, Dr. Graham’s Homes plays an exceptional role in promoting cultural activities—especially music. The school authorities strongly believe that music is one of the most important aspects of a student’s school life.
In 2007, a group of selected students from the school embarked on a highly successful tour of the United Kingdom. They performed at prestigious venues such as St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle. Their performances were attended by distinguished personalities including Justin Timberlake and Elton John.
Through such opportunities, the school continues to nurture talent and provide students with unforgettable cultural experiences.
Dr. Graham’s Homes plays a vital role in shaping the mental and emotional development of children. The school strives to equip students with essential life skills that go beyond academics and help enrich their lives beyond the classroom.
Students regularly participate in a wide range of activities such as debates, quizzes, drama, swimming, volleyball, and basketball. These competitive events not only boost their confidence but also bring the school continued recognition and success.
The campus is also home to a beautiful chapel named the Catherine Graham Memorial Chapel, built in 1925 by John Graham in memory of his wife. In addition, there is a picturesque church within the premises that draws both tourists and visitors. From this serene church, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the majestic Kanchenjunga—making it a truly special place within the school.
Originally established for Anglo-Indian students, Dr. Graham’s Homes opened its doors in the 1950s to Tibetan refugees who had fled their homeland. Any tourist or visitor who steps onto the campus cannot help but feel inspired by its peaceful atmosphere and strong sense of purpose.
Nestled near the borders of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, the school truly lives up to its motto: "A home away from home."
